(We were sitting for the pups.)

This note tickled me.
My dad knows me so well.
Oh, and did you catch his reference to Tuesday night’s dinner? He was planning a Boys Night, with an extensive and oh-so-manly menu.
But, alas, one of the men fell ill and so I received a late in the game invite, asking if I’d like to slip into the vacated spot.
Um. Duh!
So, I’ll write more about that later*. I can’t write now.
But it’s not b/c I don’t love you.

*(Forreal, though, for the full recap, make sure to check back this evening in the Family Dinner section under Tuesday Dinners. And trust me, you’ll want to see what’s in store.)

Did you feel that?
That would be the new chill in the air, as the night air has finally succumbed to autumn.
Did you hear that?
That would be the crunch of the fallen leaves under your feet,
as the branches are starting to yellow, soon to be set on fire, before growing bare and cold.
Did you smell that?
That would be firewood, burning quietly in some fireplaces tonight.
Fall is here,
and now, as the sun has set, so is Shabbat.
Tonight was absolutely lovely, as Friday nights go.
We had a decadent Shabbat feast,
cooked by our own personal Top Chef,
and devoured every bite of the Parmesan and lemon crusted chicken Milanese, roasted Brussels sprouts and ridiculously velevetyamazingdecadent butternut squash puree,
as we took turns bouncing the baby and planning our coordinating Halloween costumes.
My friends, you’re in for a treat.
But, I’m getting ahead of myself.
After dinner, we had to rush home, so that the baby could get to bed at a decent hour,
but not before we gathered around the table to light the Shabbat candles.
As we said the blessings,
I watched my dad and husband dance around in circles with the baby, making her giggle and squeal.
I could say that their smiles glowed more brightly than the candles’ flames,
but then I’d have to whack myself with a hunk of challah,
so I’ll just say that it was very special and made my heart sing.
An auspicious start to a new week,
and a new season,
with our newest family member,
I’d say.
I’d also say, Shalom.
Hello October,
Goodbye Summer,
And may peace be with you.

The following conversation may or may not have happened this evening:
Me: Do you know what’s a shame?
Husband: What’s that?
Me: That you don’t like peanut butter.
Husband: I know.
Me: Like, seriously. It’s a problem.
Husband: I know. Seriously. It makes no sense.
Me: Seriously! How could you not like peanut butter? It’s amazing.
Husband: I know. I love peanuts, I love butter, I don’t know why I don’t like it. What’s wrong with me?
Me: You have to try it again. It’s soooooooo good. Peanut butter desserts are the BEST.
Husband: I know, I bet peanut butter makes things so much better. I have to like it.
Me: Tonight, I want you to take a spoonful.
Husband: No, I’m not ready.
Me: Come on. Buck up.
Husband: No. But how about a Reese’s.
Me: MMMMMMMM Reese’s.
Husband: How about Reese’s Pieces?
Me: I need them. NOW. Can you go out and get them?
Husband: Really? Ok.
[Husband pauses to think]
Husband: Do you know what we should totally do? We should do a Top Chef style candy bar taste test challenge.
Me: No, we can’ do that. Can we?
Husband: We’re doing it.

Yes, we are adults.
Yes, we are parents.
Yes we have impulse control.
Allegedly.
I don’t care.
He had me at Reese’s.
So, I will give you one guess as to what we will be doing as soon as our daughter falls asleep.
I’ll give you a hint:
It’s nutty.
I know, I crack myself up, too.
Get it?
Crack?
As in “nut”?
Okay, enough. Candy bars are a-callin’.
Judge all you want.
But I’m the one with the candy.

Here is the recipe for making 2 tired, new parents ridiculously happy:
Take 1 boring Thursday night.
Add a boat load of candy.
Throw in a dash of competitive spirit.
Live sweetly and enjoy.
