you are my sunshine

This afternoon, during the great deluge,
my husband scooped the baby up into his arms and took her to the window.
I couldn’t hear what he was saying word-for-word,
but I could make out enough of his voice to know that he was telling her about the rain she was seeing.
The two of them stood, staring through the sopping glass windows, and watched as the rain fell onto the hot earth.
It was a beautiful picture, and I’m glad to have it etched in my mind and my memory.
These two,
they make me happy, when skies are gray.
