rules of the road

We all know about DWP or driving while pacifying
And today, while schlepping my baby and two dogs from point A to point B, I realized that these old rules no longer apply. You see, they’ve all been replaced with new driving-while-essentials.
DWL: Driving While Lullabying
This tool is used when trying to settle a sleepy, crying, or otherwise discontent infant. May be performed by singing a capella or along with the radio and/or CDs. A current  list of favorites include: my audio cassette tape (yes, you read it right) of Elvis Costello’s “Brutal Youth” album, the soundtrack of Spring Awakening and the Bob Marley Baby lullaby CD.
DWHH: Driving While Holding Hands
This is usually performed when mother peers back into baby’s infant seat, while at a red light, in order to insure that pacifier is still securely in place. Then, when mother catches a glimpse of tiny baby hand, mother cannot resist holding said hand and giving each little tiny baby finger a squeeze.
DWPD: Driving While Petting Dogs
This can only be performed when dogs are in the front passenger seat. They are now allowed to sit in front passenger seat because the mommy usually feels guilty for spending most of her time with the baby, leaving dogs attention starved and with constant “puppy dog eyes”.
DWSPOFIM: Driving While Shoving Piece of Food in Mouth
Because, what new mom really has time to sit and eat a long leisurely lunch these days, anyway?
DWH (Not to be confused with DWHH): Driving while Happymealing
Caused by unshakable need for baby to stay in constant motion. When parents have exhausted all other resources and are desperate need of a meal, DWH allows moms and dads alike to get a cheap, satisfying meal (see DWSPOFIM) while keeping the peace. And, it comes with a toy.
