New Skin For my New Decade: SOOTHE by Rodan + Fields

Along with the launch of my new website back in December, I also simultaneously launched a partnership with Rodan + Fields and a couple of their top skincare consultants.

I have written before about their entire product line and also specifically about my experience with their awesome lip products (I am still using my ENHANCEMENTS Lip Micro-Dermabrasion and ESSENTIALS Lip Shield with SPF 25 over two months later and I made my REDEFINE Lip Renewing Serum last as long as humanly possible. Like, a ridiculously long time.)

But, with this latest birthday I have been especially conscious of my skincare routine and needs. Yes, Twin, I know I brought eye cream with us to Barcelona when I was 19, but not I am talking about getting really really real.

Because so many readers have expressed interest in and become clients of Rodan + Fields, I decided that I had to finally ask a fabulous, dynamic level IV Executive Consultant for R+F, what I should be doing as far as my own routine.

I love beauty products as much as any other woman, but I am wary when it comes to certain things. First, I have very sensitive skin. This does not mean that I break out, but instead that I get irritated easily, though I don’t suffer from any chronic redness or similar conditions. Second, I want to invest in my skin, but I want to do so thoughtfully, on a realistic budget (Read: I could spend an entire month’s income on skin products, and I am trying to avoid that, sticking to the things that I really need).

My personal consultant suggested that I start by trying out the SOOTHE regimen. It says that it is for “Sensitive, Irritated Skin and Facial Redness”, which isn’t a dead ringer for my skin-type, but we thought that was a great way for me to ease into the Rodan + Fields line.

I committed to 8 days of the SOOTHE regimen, which my consultant instructed me to use morning and night.

This meant that I used:

1. Gentle Cream Wash to cleanse my face

2. Sensitive Skin Treatment to soothe any inflammation

3. Moisture Replenishing Cream to hydrate and nourish

4. Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30

and I will tell you, I did not miss a single use. I was actually excited to complete my face routine each day.

After the first two days I sent my consultant a text message and I told her two things: First, that it is very hard to take skin selfies and second, that I feel like there is definitely a psychological aspect to this skincare routine; in knowing that I was taking care of my skin with nourishing, soothing and hydrating ingredients, I felt both virtuous and even, dare I say, fresher. My skin felt prettier. And though I am sure that some of this can be attributed to the “placebo effect”, I do believe that the idea of taking care of oneself is a powerful tool, and it did for me exactly what it was supposed to do. My SOOTHE regimen gave me confidence, even from day 1.

Things that I noticed about the SOOTHE products:

Because they are designed for sensitive skin, they do not have any scents. It is unusual, at first, to wash your face with something that smells like nothing (when we are so used to skin washes that smell like everything from cucumbers to chemicals) but I started to like it. Actually, I really liked it.

A little goes a long way. 8 days of the SOOTHE product and I barely made a dent in any of the containers.

The creams were all extremely absorbent, so despite applying three different lotions to my skin, I felt dewy as opposed to greasy.

And so my selfies began.

First, with day 1.

I cleansed, I soothed, I moisturized, I sunscreened. My skin is OK to start with; I have some good DNA on my side, but I do have both freckles and forehead lines. And injections I do not have, nor will I.

This next photo was taken halfway through my treatment, first thing in the morning. This is really when I started to feel dewy. Glowy. This is when I texted my consultant from the bathroom, saying “Selfies are freakin’ hard, but I love this stuff!”photo 2(3)

And next, the psychological part really started to kick in. I caught a glimpse of my skin in the reflection of my car and I thought, “Wow. My skin looks healthy.” and so I took a photo of myself, something that I never do. I am not vain, nor am I particularly selfie-confident, but you can see here, in the bright sunlight, with no filter, in the reflection of my metallic car, that my skin was taking to SOOTHE quite nicely. In the photo below I am wearing no makeup and a messy ponytail, but I felt good about my face. That doesn’t happen too often. I still don’t like the lines in my forehead, but I can live with them. Or, better yet, as my R+F consultant tells me, I won’t have to…photo 3(2)

Finally, my consultant turned new (but seems like old) friend and I met up to talk about the products (A.K.A. enjoy each others’ company at the Farmer’s Market while we chatted away) and I told her that I had only positive things to say about my experience with SOOTHE, and that I am anxious to explore the other anti-aging products that she has to offer. I explained that I did not know how to address my aging issues and insecurities while still having sensitive skin. And, not surprisingly, she assured me that she can help.

So I give the Rodan + Fields SOOTHE Regimen a perfect score. It provided me with clear, bright skin, a nice, natural glow, sun-protection and, most of all, confidence.

I can’t wait to try what is next.
